Asking well

How to ask for what you want

Say the content and the point. Let the assistant choose the layout.

The most common mistake is describing a slide's appearance instead of its argument. Appearance is the part the assistant is good at choosing. The argument is the part only you have.

Lead with the point

Describes the furniture
Make a slide with three boxes across the middle and icons above them.
Describes the point
Make a slide that shows the three reasons the rollout slipped, weighted so the supplier delay reads as the main one.

The second version gets you a better slide, because the layout is chosen to serve the argument rather than being imposed on it.

Scope one request at a time

A request that changes the structure, rewrites the copy and restyles the charts will do all three roughly. Three requests in sequence will do each one properly, and you get a checkpoint between them.

Name your constraints

  • Length: how many slides, or how many points on one slide.
  • Tone: who is reading it and how much they already know.
  • Fixed material: wording you cannot change, or a structure the client expects.
  • What to leave alone: the slides you have already got right.
